Welcome to WHISPERING HILLS GARDEN. I'm Pat Sayers and it seems like I've been tilling the soil forever. My garden is located on the north shore of Long Island, New York, up in the hills of Huntington, in zone 6. It's been lots of fun building my present garden of "secret garden rooms" from just over an acre of woods.
In 1988, I started hybridizing daylilies, with a little time off when life got in the way. During the height of my hybridizing, I consistently lined out 5000 seedlings a year. I don't have a hybridizing direction other than to follow my heart, my intuition and a bit of Mendle. Being an artist, I love clean clear colors, so, I just played.
I've been watching my selected seedlings for the past 14 years, have been pressured into registering a few, have been lucky enough to win a few AHS awards, ( HM for Passion's Promise) but I am just now starting to release my plants for sale . Nature has helped me in the selection process. The Springs here are very difficult, because of the constant freeze thaws from March thru May. It's not unusual for us to be 65 during the day and 20 at night. For plants to grow here they have to be very hardy and very vigorous.
We love visitors, but because this is a small hybridizing garden, and not commercial, you must call first. (631) 261-5400 and (516) 650-2320 All visits are by appointment only. Peak season starts second week of July.
I accept speaking engagements and have a variety of talks about daylilies as well as other gardening topics. The garden also hosts tours and English Teas for local garden clubs and plant societies by appointment. Please call (631) 261-5400.
